Israel Galvan at the Joyce

Israel Galvan’s La Edad de Oro is a mastery in flamenco dance.

The 75 minute performance of pure dance of Israel Galvan, cante jondo by David Lagos and guitar by Alfredo Lagos started out very serious and ended with high-energy theatrics. The technical precision of Galvan’s footwork was impressive but it was his flexibility and control that truly shined. The extension of his back, arms, and legs that crossed the boundary into the style of dance known as “Voguing” (and I mean that in the nicest way possible). It was the traditional music that led to the exploration of movement and rhythms for Galvan without being over the top.

All in all, the unique forms and technical mastery made for a performance that I did not want to end.
