Pinnacle of Pursuit at the Hartt School

As the Senior Concert Coordinator, Katie Stevinson-Nollet said, the Pinnacle of Pursuit represents four years of study culminating in a piece choreographed by a senior at the Hartt School at the University of Hartford. My friend and former dancing buddy, Chantal Doucett choreographed a piece called Connectivity with music by Ludovico Einaudi and I gotta say that it was amazing.

Having seen a few senior and masters concerts, the Pinnacle of Pursuit came off as somewhat unimaginative. Chantal’s piece had what the others didn’t – a theme, strong partnering, interesting choreography, appropriate costumes, technically superb dancers and most importantly, musicality. Other pieces played out like musical theater or cirque du soleil and did not have the depth that I would assume four years of work would lead to. For all the prestige the dance program at the Hartt School has, I was somewhat disappointed with the quality of work. That said, it was a student show.

Also as part of this final performance, each senior performed a solo by a renowned choreographer. Chantal performed Force of Circumstance (excerpt 2008) – a piece by Sean Curran that was adapted by Christina Robson with music by Chris Lancaster and lighting by Joe Doran. Now I must note that in preparation for this performance, I sat at home and watched old dance videos for 2 hours (while stretching) to have a point of reference – I last saw Chantal dance four years ago – and her dancing has matured greatly. She has learned quality of movement and it was evident that she has a greater vocabulary of movement. I am sure that she will go on to do great things in dance.

All in all, I was very glad that I was able to see Chantal’s work and to see the work done by students at the Hartt School.

Also, I had to include this as part of my dance maturity post…
